Six generations of Auers have kept this room exactly as it stood when Napoléon III’s confectioners sent their order. Marble counter, glass jars on the back wall, the smell of orange-flower water. The candied citrons keep for months; the chocolates do not.

The candied citron travels well; buy a small box rather than the large one.
