In a house Modigliani and Soutine once painted in, the Mendjinsky family have run Josy-Jo for half a century — grilled meats and fish over charcoal, ratatouille, a flowered terrace in the medieval lanes. It is the village's sentimental favourite, and books out on its name.

Ask for the terrace; the dining room is fine but the bougainvillea is the point.
